Review: Nokia X Dual SIM

When Microsoft bought over Nokia in 2013, the buzz was that the company was in the midst of developing an Android smartphone. As soon as the news of the acquisition was broken, any hopes of the company developing an Android phone were also quashed. However, everyone was surprised when Nokia managed to launch its Nokia X series of Android phones on the market.

Today we have the Nokia X Dual SIM smartphone for review at the Review Central Labs. One look at the phone and you will realise how Nokia has cleverly fused Android and Windows-like UI together through the Nokia X software platform to give users a new experience when it comes to smartphone interfaces. The Nokia X Dual SIM also features a good design and build quality, and a really attractive price tag.

Nokia uses polycarbonate to build the X Dual SIM that features a matte finish. Though the case might feel like a single piece, the back of the phone forms a wraparound cover for the phone and is removable, which then reveals the battery slot, the SIM card slots and the microSD slot. Removing the back cover does take some time to get used to and it does prove to be a bit difficult at times.

On the front of the phone, you will find a single back button just below the display area. The polycarbonate back of the phone is available in green, white, yellow, cyan, red and the usual black and white colours. So, in case you buy a Nokia X and then grow tired of the colour, all you have to do is remove the back panel and switch with a new back panel with a different colour.

Inside the box, Nokia bundles a charger, a microUSB-to-USB cable, a headset, and user manuals. The phone features a 4-inch IPS LCD screen with a resolution of 800-by-480 pixels. Under the hood, the Nokia X Dual SIM runs on a 1Ghz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Play dual-core CPU with an Adreno 203, and 512MB of RAM. The phone also comes with an internal storage capacity of 4GB, while the microSD slot will allow you to increase the storage capacity by up to 32GB.

On the software side, technically, the Nokia X Dual SIM runs Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean. However, Nokia seems to have crafted a neat interface by mashing up the Windows Phone and Asha UI for this device. So, if you browse through the “About phone” under “Settings” menu you will see that the Nokia X Dual SIM runs on what Nokia called Nokia X software platform 1.0.

What that essentially means is that the Nokia X Dual SIM runs a forked version of Android 4.1.2 that uses Google’s standard AOSP but doesn’t actually have access to any of Google’s suite of services. So, Google services such as Google Play Store, Google Maps, Gmail, and so on is not included. Instead, Nokia has integrated OneDrive, Outlook, HERE Maps, Nokia MixRadio, and so on, on the device.

Battery life is amazing on the Nokia X Dual SIM. On a single full charge of the battery, we were able to eke out 9 hours of talk time. The Nokia X Dual SIM is a great phone for first time smartphone users. If you are looking for a great second phone, the Nokia X Dual SIM might fit the bill, too.
