HMD Global announces plans for Android 11 and Android 12 OS updates for Nokia smartphones, even for entry-level devices

Continuing in its promise and leadership in Android OS upgrades, HMD Global, the maker of Nokia phones, today unveils a set of milestones further solidifying its ongoing commitment to always providing pure, secure and up-to-date Android fans can trust. Nokia smartphones remain at the forefront of both security updates and Android OS upgrades, as recognised by research from Counterpoint. According to their data, 94% of the Nokia smartphone portfolio updated to the latest Android version within a year of new Android release. This made it the fastest brand to reach this level. This week, the Android 10 rollout completes with the update of the Nokia 3.1 and the Nokia 5.1.

Juho Sarvikas, Chief Product Officer, HMD Global, said:

“Upgrading the operating system of a phone is an intricate process involving multiple partners and a variety of tests. We are hugely proud of the industry-leading process we have in place for Nokia smartphones and continue to make it a key priority of ours to ensure our customers benefit from the latest Android innovation ahead of competition in every price point.”

In just over 3 years, Nokia smartphones have collectively been updated 1,000 times – a significant milestone proving the company’s unwavering commitment to ensuring its fans are always using the most up-to-date features in the most secure environment. Committed to full transparency, HMD Global today releases its timeline for upgrading its Android 11-ready portfolio to the latest Android OS. The rollout is planned to commence in Q4 2020 with the newly-available Nokia 8.3 5G and the Nokia 5.3. Proving the company’s commitment to providing equal support to smartphones across the portfolio regardless of price points and launch dates, owners of the Nokia 2.2 and Nokia 8.1 will also be among the first to experience Android 11 this year.

Nokia android updates

Nokia smartphones’ pure Android 11 software is easy to use and gets to what is important, with a streamlined interface and no bloatware:

  • Manage your conversations: Stay in touch with those who matter by managing conversations across multiple messaging apps all in one place on your Nokia smartphone.
  • “Hey Google, show me my day”: Using the dedicated Google Assistant button or just your voice, get a full snapshot of your day, and when you need to focus or unwind, use the Digital Wellbeing tools like Focus mode and Bedtime mode.
  • Permissions auto-reset: Supporting our commitment to delivering secure and reliable mobile experiences, Nokia smartphones on Android 11 will reset the permissions of apps that haven’t been used in a while, allowing only recent apps access to personal data.

Nokia handsets are pure, secure and up-to-date – they come with up to three years of monthly security updates and two years of OS updates so customers can get more out of their phones for longer; recently launched smartphones, even in the entry-level segment such as the Nokia 3.4 and 2.4, are already primed for the next step in Android innovations – Android 12.
