Sony launches the Xperia 1 III and Xperia 5 III, features 120Hz displays and variable telephoto cameras

Sony has officially announced the third iteration of the Xperia 1 and Xperia 5 series smartphones. The latest Xperia 1 III and the Xperia 5 III devices come with a similar design as their predecessors and a variable telephoto camera where users will be able to switch between different focal lengths.

There are a total of three cameras with 12MP each. The 12MP telephoto camera uses a 1/2.9′ mobile sensor with either f/2.3 or f/2.8 as its aperture. The aperture changes when users change the focal length between 70mm or 105mm. The telephoto shooter also features optical image stabilization.

As for the main camera, the 12MP shooter features the same old and amazing 1/1.7′ image sensor, along with an f/1.7 aperture lens. The other 12MP shooter is meant for ultra-wide shots with a 1/2.6′ sensor and f/2.2 as its aperture. Sony has used ZEISS lens with T coating. The Xperia 1 III has a 3D ToF camera for real-time Eye AF.

Sony has also included its software camera features found on its Alpha mirrorless cameras, such as the real-time Eye AF for animal and human subjects, Optical SteadyShot stabilization, and slow-motion 4K video recording at 4K resolution. The front camera is the same as its predecessors, featuring an 8MP selfie snapper.

Apart from the optics, both smartphones do differ in terms of size. The Xperia 1 III comes with a 6.5-inch 4K OLED display, while the Xperia 5 III features a smaller 6.1-inch OLED display with FHD resolution. Both smartphones have an aspect ratio of 21:9. While the new devices differ in terms of screen size and resolution, both the screens do feature a fast 120Hz refresh rate and HDR support. The Xperia 1 III also uses Gorilla Glass Victus on the front display and frosted Gorilla Glass 6 on the rear. However, the Xperia 5 III uses Gorilla Glass 6 on both the front and rear glass panels. Additionally, both smartphones feature IP65 and IP68 certifications to indicate dust and water resistance.

Sony has used the Snapdragon 888 processor to power both devices. However, the Xperia 1 III comes with 12GB RAM and 256GB or 512GB of internal storage. The Xperia 5 III is offered in two different configurations that include the 8GB RAM/128GB ROM model and 8GB RAM/256GB model. Users will be able to expand the storage with MicroSD cards, thanks to the hybrid dual SIM slots.

The new devices also allow game recording at 1080p resolution and at 120fps. Sony has also included a new recording feature called the Rewind, where the device records the last 30 seconds of gameplay duration, allowing users to keep a highlight of the game.

Both the smartphones pack the same 4500 mAh battery with support for 30W fast charge. Sony claims that users will be able to achieve a 50% charge in half an hour and the battery performance would not be affected for at least three years. The difference between the two models is that the Xperia 1 III brings support for wireless charging, while the Xperia 5 III sticks to wired charging capability.

The Sony Xperia 1 III will come in Frosted Black, Frosted Purple, and Frosted Gray colors, while the Xperia 5 III comes in Black, Green, and Pink colors. It’s been a while that Sony has released its smartphones in the UAE, so there isn’t any confirmation that the new flagships will make their way here. That said, the new devices are said to be available in other countries during summer.
