Canon has officially unveiled its latest high-end full-frame shooters called the EOS R5 with 8K video capabilities and the EOS R6 cameras. The new mirrorless cameras mark Canon’s entry into the professional mirrorless camera market and take on the likes of Sony and Nikon.
The new Canon EOS R5, which is the high-end model of the two cameras, holds a 45MP full-frame CMOS sensor and uses the Digic X image processor that is used on the 1DX Mark III DSLR. This powerful combo allows the EOS R5 to record 8K RAW videos at 30p, and 10-bit 4:2:2 4K videos up to 120p framerates. The camera is capable of full-resolution videos at a mighty 20fps with an electronic shutter and 12fps with the mechanical shutter. This is clearly aimed at the Sony A9 series of cameras. The EOS R5 also comes with 5-axis IBIS which is a first for Canon cameras (up to 8 stops), along with Dual Pixel CMOS AF II that is claimed to offer 100% coverage of the focus area of 1053 AF points. The camera also features a 5.76 million dot OLED EVF with a fast 120Hz refresh rate, along with a 2.1 million dot fully articulating LCD display, dual card slots for CF Express and UHS-II CD cards, mic port, mini HDMI, headphone jack, built-in WiFi, Bluetooth and more. Its also sports a weather and dust resistant build.
The Canon EOS R6 sports a 20.1MP full-frame CMOS image sensor that is the same one used on the Canon 1DX Mark III and once again with the same Digic X image processor. The EOS R6 video capabilities include 10-bit 4:2:2 4K videos at 60p, and 1080p or 120p in slow motion mode. You still will get full-resolution images at 20fps continuous shots with electronic shutter and 12fps with the mechanical shutter. We can see Canon is on full swing on high-speed shooting with both the cameras. The R6 gets the same autofocus and IBIS as the R5. However, the EOS R6 does not come with a top-view LCD screen and the OLED viewfinder comes with 3.69 million dots of resolution and the rear LCD at 1.62 million dots. That said, the EOF R6 also gets dual slots for cards but for two UHS-II cards, mini HDMI port, headphone jack, mic port, WiFi, and Bluetooth. The EOS R6 also features weather, drip, and dust sealed design that is on par with the EOS 6D series.
The EOS R5 body-only costs $3900 (approx. 14,324 AED) and with an RF 24-105mm F/4L IS USM kit lens combo for $5000 (approx. 18,365 AED). The EOS R6 body-only will cost $2900 (approx. 10,651 AED) and with the RF 24-105mm F/4L IS USM kit lens combination for $3600 (approx. 13,222 AED).
