Huawei announces the Mate X2 foldable flagship smartphone, features a periscope camera, seamless hinge design, and OLED displays

Huawei’s latest entry into the foldable smartphone market is the new Mate X2, featuring a new inward foldable design and also comes with a periscope camera, along with high-megapixel cameras, the latest SoC, 5G, and more.

The new smartphone features a wedge-shaped design and is thicker where the camera is located. The thinnest part of the smartphone is only 4.4mm. When it comes to the displays, the inner screen when fully expanded is 8-inch in size and features a square-like aspect ratio that is 8:7.1. And the screen resolution is 2480 x 2200.

When folded, the external screen has a tall 21:9 aspect ratio and is 6.45-inch in size. Both the displays are OLED with a snappy 90Hz refresh rate. Huawei also has added deeper DCI-P3 colors for the 8-inch display, while the 6.45-inch screen features a 240Hz touch sampling rate as opposed to the 180Hz of the internal screen.

The 8-inch OLED display also feature the world’s first “magnetically-controlled nano-optical layer”, which basically means the reflectivity of the display is only 1.5% as compared to the 5% of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2. The smartphone has a hinge design that helps to close the device in a seamless fashion, without any visible gaps that are usually seen on other foldable devices.

The company also uses Zirconium-based liquid metal and carbon fiber panels to reduce the overall weight of the device. That said, the Mate X2 is still heavy and weighs 295g. The quad-camera system with Leica optics features a large 50MP main shooter with a 1/1.28-inch RYYB mobile image sensor, along with a bright f/1.9 aperture with OIS and 4K video recording. The camera can also be used to capture selfie images.

The Mate X2 is the first foldable smartphone to come with a periscope camera. The sensor is 8MP and features a 10x periscope lens with f/4.4 as its aperture. The periscope camera offers 20x hybrid zoom and 100x digital zoom mode. The third camera comes with a 12MP shooter with 3x optical zoom, f/2.4 as its aperture, and OIS.

The fourth camera is an ultra-wide shooter with a 16MP image sensor that also can be used for macro shots. The whole smartphone design features a single selfie camera. With the front camera located on the secondary display, the main 8-inch display is free from notches. However, you won’t be able to do video calls with the primary display.

That said, the smartphone has a fingerprint scanner that is located on the side of the device. The new Huawei Mate X2 comes powered by the Kirin 9000 SoC. The chip is based on TSMC’s 5nm fabrication and features four Cortex A77 cores, clocked at 3.13 GHz, along with another four Cortex A55 cores and a Mali-G78 MP24 GPU.

The device runs on Android 10 OS with EMUI 11 UI enhancements. The smartphone also comes with 8GB RAM, along with 256GB or 512GB of internal storage. The new Mate X2 is also 5G capable and the company has fused the antenna in a way you will always receive a strong signal no matter how you hold the smartphone. While the Mate X2 is a dual-SIM smartphone, users will also be able to use an NM memory card on the second SIM slot.

The device also houses a large 4500 mAh battery with support for 55W Super Fast charging (with included adapter). The retail package will come with a USB-C cable and even a USB Type-C-based headphone, (since the new device does not feature a 3.5mm audio jack), a leather protective case, and screen protectors for both displays.

The new Huawei Mate X2 will be available for the Chinese market by March 25. However, the company has yet to disclose its launch price and availability for the UAE. We will let you know once Huawei launches the Mate X2 in the UAE.
