Review: ASUS ProArt Display PA147CDV Creative Tool

The ASUS ProArt series monitors are known for their vibrant colors and special features that are fine-tuned for creative professionals. We look at the ASUS ProArt Display PA147CDV, and here are our thoughts about the portable pro-level display.

Design

While many portable monitors are currently available, the ASUS ProArt Display PA147CDV is solely designed to enhance the productivity of creative professionals. As you can see, the monitor features a 32:9 aspect ratio as opposed to the normal 16:9, 16:10, and 21:9 displays that we often come across. The 14-inch touchscreen IPS panel comes with a respectable screen resolution of 1920 x 550. The display also features a response time of 5ms (GTG) and a 60Hz refresh rate. The aspect ratio does remind us of the secondary screen that is used on laptops such as the ASUS Zenbook Duo series and the ASUS ROG Zephyrus Duo laptops.

The ProArt Display PA147CDV uses an award-winning patented mechanical kickstand design that lets users adjust the screen to their preferred angle. You will be able to tilt the display between +25° ~ 70°, and pivot 0° ~ 90° clockwise. Video editors and designers can lay flat the screen when they want to sketch or tilt the display upwards while editing videos. Since it’s an IPS panel, the viewing angles are also great.

The monitor also has several connectivity and control options. On the rear side, there is the main power button, along with an HDMI 1.4 port and two USB-C ports with DisplayPort Alt Mode support. On the left, there is a button to activate the OSD menu and a control wheel called the ASUS Dial that helps users easily glide through the monitor options. There is also the wording on the rear side that says “Designed by ASUS in Taiwan”.

The OSD menu design is very similar to the ones used on other ASUS monitors. You can easily tinker with most of the settings such as brightness, input selection, OSD customization, picture modes, and more. The screen also has dual 1W speakers on either side of the kickstand.

The placement of the HDMI and USB-C ports on the rear side ensures users have neat cable management. It should be noted that when I used the HDMI cable to connect the screen to my laptop or PC, we had to also resort to using the USB-C cable to provide more power for the ProArt display (10W requirement according to ASUS). We also tried using a USB-C port to DisplayPort cable and the ProArt display connected flawlessly. The monitor with its kickstand weighs about 0.950 kg.

Features

Since the PA147CDV is a part of the ProArt series, users can expect rich colors and advanced color gamut adjustment options. The screen offers a full 100% sRGB and 100% Rec. 709 color gamut coverage that helps to showcase vivid colors and deeper immersion of the primary colors such as red, green, and blue. And thanks to the Delta E < 2 color accuracy, the images are accurately reproduced visually.

The PA147CDV display is also pre-calibrated from the factory and Calman Verified, which guarantees industry-leading color accuracy. Creators can switch between ProArt presets such as Standard, sRGB, DCI-P3, Rec. 709, Scenery, Reading, Darkroom, and two user-based modes. You also have options to choose from five different color temperature modes. The screen also has support for features such as ProArt Palette, QuickFit, ProArt Chroma Tune, Flicker Free, and Low Blue Light modes.

While ASUS Dial is used to explore the OSD menu, its main function is to let users enhance their productivity skills with compatible Adobe software such as Photoshop, Photoshop Lightroom Classic, Premiere Pro, and After Effects. One can use the ASUS Dial to zoom in and out of their workload images, adjust the size of the brush, and more. The touchscreen also features a 10-point multifunction panel that allows users to make the most out of Adobe applications, along with support for Microsoft Pen Protocol 2.0. ASUS also offers the free ProArt Creator Hub software tool that is designed to assist professionals to calibrate the performance, colors, and more.
