Samsung recently released its latest generation Galaxy Flip and Fold series smartphones, featuring new hardware, improved design, and performance. We got a chance to try out the new Galaxy Z Flip 6, and here are our thoughts about it.
Design
The new Galaxy Flip 6 features the Armor aluminum frame with a dimension of 85.1 x 71.9 x 14.9 mm. When unfolded, the dimensions are 165.1 x 71.9 x 6.9 mm. The device weighs about 187g, which is quite lightweight. The main display comes with a 6.7-inch Foldable Dynamic LTPO AMOLED 2X panel. The screen resolution is 1080 x 2640 pixels, along with 426 ppi density, and the refresh rate is 120 Hz. Samsung claims that the main foldable display can output a maximum of 2600 nits of brightness, which is good for outdoor usage under the bright sun.
The viewing angles of the display are excellent, as you would expect for any other AMOLED displays. The folding crease is not so noticeable, unless you look from a particular angle, and the 120Hz refresh rate helps for the overall UX experience. Users will be easily able to handle the Galaxy Flip 6 for one-handed usage.
However, the outer cover display does not get the same fast refresh rate, and is limited to only 60 Hz. That said, the outer display features a 3.4-inch Super AMOLED display, 1600 nits of peak brightness, and 720 x 748 pixels of screen resolution. We should also mention that both the main foldable display and the cover display come with Gorilla Glass Victus 2 for screen protection against scratches and bumps.
The volume rocker and the power/fingerprint scanner button are located on the right side of the device. The Samsung logo is seen on the rear hinge side. Samsung mentions that the Flip 6 comes with a durable hinge design that features a dual rail hinge structure that helps to distribute the shock of external impacts.
The new FlexHinge on the Flip 6 features better endurance while folding and unfolding the device. The smartphone also comes with IP48 water resistant certification. The Galaxy Z Flip 6 comes in Silver Shadow, Yellow, Blue, Mint, Crafted Black, White, and Peach colors.
Performance
While Samsung introduced minimal design changes on the new Galaxy Z Flip 6, the new smartphone comes with a faster Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, an 8-core SoC, along with Adreno 750 as its integrated GPU. The SoC is supported with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of internal UFS 4.0 storage. There is also a 512GB storage variant of the device. Samsung mentions that the Z Flip 6 is the first in its series to come with a Vapor Chamber, that helps to keep the device cool, while performing at its maximum potential. The smartphone runs on Android 14 OS, along with the One UI 6.1.1 interface.
During our usage, the Z Flip 6 performed well without any slowdowns, even during some gaming. We ran some benchmark apps, which include Antutu, Geekbench 6, and 3DMark tests. Check out the scores below.
The smartphone also comes with a 4000 mAh battery, with support for 25W fast charge, and 15W wireless charging. During our time with the smartphone, the Flip 6 was able to last an entire day, while we made several calls, snapped several images, surfed the internet, made video calls, and more. You will also be able to do reverse wireless charging with compatible devices, but at a modest 4.5W power. Other features include WiFi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, USB-C 3.2, and more.
Camera
Samsung has also introduced new camera sensors on its latest Flip smartphone. The Flip 6 features two cameras on its rear side, with the main shooter sporting a 50MP sensor with f/1.8 aperture lens. The second camera is a 12MP snapper for ultrawide shots. The front camera packs a 10 MP sensor with f/2.2 as its aperture. Both the main rear camera and the front camera sensors are capable of 4K at 60fps videos.
We tried some shots using the camera for both daytime and night-time situations, and with different focal lengths. Take a look at the samples below.
