Dubai launches world’s first human-machine icon classification system

His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Dubai Future Foundation, has approved the launch of a groundbreaking global classification system designed to define and disclose the role of humans and intelligent machines in the creation of creative, scientific, academic, and intellectual content.

“In today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape, separating human creativity from artificial intelligence has become increasingly challenging,” His Highness stated. “This calls for a new framework to recognize the growing influence of intelligent machines. That’s why we’ve introduced the Human–Machine Collaboration Icons—an innovative system that brings transparency to how content is developed.”

His Highness urged global researchers, writers, publishers, designers, and creators to adopt the system ethically and responsibly. All Dubai Government entities have been instructed to begin implementation in their content and research initiatives.

Introducing the Human–Machine Collaboration (HMC) System
Developed by the Dubai Future Foundation, the HMC system aims to increase transparency by visually indicating the level of machine involvement in content creation. It encompasses a wide range of intelligent technologies, including algorithms, generative AI, robotics, and automation tools.

🧠 Five Levels of Human–Machine Collaboration:

  • All Human – Entirely human-created
  • Human Led – Human-created with machine refinement
  • Machine Assisted – Collaborative effort between human and machine
  • Machine Led – Machine-driven with human oversight
  • All Machine – Fully machine-generated

Nine Functional Icons Representing the Collaboration Process: Ideation, literature review, data collection, data analysis, data interpretation, writing, translation, visuals, and design.

The flexible icon system is designed to be applicable across sectors and content types—including video and image creation—without assigning specific percentage contributions. Instead, it relies on creator transparency and informed judgement.
