Review: Nikon Coolpix L320

Nikon’s new Coolpix L320 compact camera is positioned as an entry-level point and shoot camera with no fuss features. This one features a 26x extreme wide-angle optical zoom at a really affordable price tag. The L320 features a 16-megapixel image sensor, alongside four automatic anti-blur functions that let you shoot crisp images even when zooming in real close to the subject.

The camera is shaped like a compact Digital SLR camera and accompanies a 3-inch LCD screen, an EXPEED C2 processor, and takes AA batteries. It is also compatible with Eye-Fi memory cards, thus allowing you to transfer photos while on the move without any hassles. The L320 is available in black colour and is quite easy to use and comfortable to handle.

In addition, it is also capable of shooting 720p HD videos. The design of the L320 is inspired by the larger L820 camera. Design-wise the L320 is pretty much a clone of the L820. What stands out, as mentioned earlier, is the 26x optical zoom capability of the L320. The zoom is operated via the zoom switch found wrapped around the shutter release on the corner of the grip/ Behind this on the main top plate is a small power button.

All the main controls on the camera can be found on the rear of the camera and are easily accessible by the thumb that will naturally rest there. The video record button sits on the shoulder and this can be used regardless of whether you’re taking pictures or not. If you want to use any of the shooting modes, all you need to do is press the green camera button on the back of the Nikon Coolpix L320.

Upon pressing the button, an intuitive menu will come up which allows you to choose between four different shooting modes – Easy auto, Scenes, Smart portrait and Auto. The camera also comes with features such as Lens-shift Vibration Reduction, motion detection, and a Best Shot Selector that picks the best snap out of ten sequential shots.

The Nikon Coolpix L320 comes with 18 different scene modes that automatically adjust the camera’s settings according to the location the user is in, but can also be set to achieve specific photographic styles or effects. For instance, when you take photographs of friends and family, the Coolpix L320 uses features such as smile timer to capture a subject when smiling, blink detectors, a skin smoothing function, and red-eye corrector to capture that perfect shot.

Image quality on the Nikon Coolpix L320 is good, probably because of the sensor overhaul the new range of Nikon digital cameras have gone through. This is a no fuss camera that anyone can use to shoot photos when out and about, without having to worry about complicated settings and so on.
