Review: Parrot Bebop Drone and Sky Controller

Parrot’s Drone and Sky Controller is a device that has been designed as a helicopter which functions via remote control. It is created to record all the aerial adventures. It is more stable and robust than DJI Phantom or any other previous drones.

One can really capture the sights and views from the height of a sky like someone is capturing the videos from an aircraft. The camera quality is so amazing and clear and thanks to its placement in the tip of the helicopter’s nose lead to capture everything and anything very easily.

It is available in two versions, $500 version and $900 version. Look wise, it is pretty nicely designed. It is made up of robust & flexible materials, yet compact and streamlined, this drone seems prepared for any crashes and mis-happening to the device. In such cases the foam cockpit and the propeller base are there to support the device.

Moreover, the placement of a 14 –megapixel camera, right on the nose of a helicopter, is been properly fitted in the device with the help of four red rubber balls fixed in the frame. Most other camera drones looks ugly as the placement of the camera is not proper and it is visible from the bottom of the aircraft.

Also, it is easy to preserve as the foam bumpers ensure that with a little squeezing it can fit into the frame when you put the bebop back in the box. The most important of all is when it can be neatly visible in any screen from an iPad to any other smart phone. It is completely awesome to view their screens turning into a real-time feed of what the camera is viewing.

However, the Parrot Bebop drone forgets to take the power back into consideration and the volume support by other phones. Hoping, this to get rectified in the upcoming drone versions. One can easily make a live video feed of 12-13 minutes, which is far better than the first version of drone. But its battery drains faster and it sends a signal of 10 percent remaining to the controller, which puts the device on an auto pilot mode and this lead to device coming back to home.

The essential thing to notice here is that the Parrot drones are designed to be flown with the help of smartphones. And more specifically, they are designed to fly via smartphone app. Supported application takes long time to understand and initialize the flying operations. It takes a long time to pair it up with the Parrot bebop drone.

However, with the recent update the processing has become real faster to pair the application with the drone device. Now coming on to the sky controller which controls device is less unreliable. Many times the contact has been lost and lead to crashes.

The sky controller is actually an android tablet and uses the same app to pair and boot up the device. However, there are so many hidden settings which need to be read through then only one may be able to fly this drone efficiently.

Most high-end drone remote controllers use radio signals to communicate directly with the aircraft. The moment you turn on both the drone and the controller, they’re paired. Not the Skycontroller—because under that plastic shell, the Skycontroller is literally an Android tablet.

It uses the exact same app to control the drone. When you turn on the Skycontroller, you’re waiting for an Android device to boot up, as your battery life trickles out. The battery life of the drone is around 12-13 minutes tops. We were typically able to keep the Bebop in the air, with a live video feed, for 12 minutes after the pairing process.

The Bebop is lots of fun to fly if you get it with the Skycontroller, not so much if you don’t. The companion app affords lots of great flight options, but it’s missing a few key features—and using it limits your flight range. The drone itself looks sweet and feels solid, but it’s on the small side and easy to lose sight of.

Price: $500 and $900.
