Review: Fossil Q54 Pilot

In today’s era of innovation, devices such as smartwatches gain instant popularity. However, countless companies have tried to design the perfect combination of style and functionality. Some have succeeded, but most have failed. A smartwatch is a device that merges a century old accessory (wrist watch) with modern day technology.

Therefore, the ideal smartwatch is the one that offers the best of both worlds. When the smartwatch technology was relatively new, smartphone manufacturers were the only ones in the market with such devices. However, times have changed! Highly reputed brands that manufacture exquisite wristwatches have also stepped into the game. The Fossil Q54 Pilot is one the prime examples of the above fact.

Fossil offers the Q54 pilot in two variants. The first one merges the stainless steel body of the watch with a metal link bracelet whereas the second one consists of a leather strap. Obviously, the metal link bracelet adds to the cost of the watch. The Fossil Q54 pilot measures 1.7 inches in width and 0.47 inches in depth.

The dial size is quite large. The reason for this are the embedded 3-axis accelerometer and haptic feedback motor. The colour scheme of this smartwatch is well suited to the overall design. The face is light beige whereas the numbers and other details sport light brown and black.

The face contains 3 smaller dials that display seconds, minutes and time in the 24-hr format. A date display is also placed between 4 and 5. The buttons on the side don’t do anything other than basic analog functions like setting the date, alarm and time. Two multi-colored LEDs are housed at the bottom the Fossil Q54 pilot and they light up when notifications arrive on your phone.

The two LEDs light up separately depending on the type of notification. The light brown leather strap that comes with the cheaper variant of the watch compliments the colour scheme of the clock face. Undoubtedly, he Fossil Q54 is a good looking smartwatch.

Establishing a connection between the Fossil Q54 and your smartphone is fairly simple. The only thing you need to do is download the android/iOS Fossil Q app. Setting up the app merely requires following the on-screen instructions. Once set up, you can track your fitness statistics via Q activity.

This section of the app will tell you how many steps you need to walk for the day or how many calories you need to burn. At the end of the day, you can easily check the above mentioned statistics as well. The app features a section called Q curiosity where random tasks are assigned.

The Q notifications section is where u select which apps you need push notifications for. The brightness or intensity of the LED can be set from low to high or vice versa. The intensity of the vibration can also be selected from low, medium and high. The fitness tracking offers only the basic features. At the price range, a more comprehensive and detailed analysis was expected. Also, the accuracy of the fitness tracker is slightly less than perfect. The sensitivity of the pilot can’t be adjusted.

If you hope to get the best of the smartphone oriented features, the Fossil Q54 is not for you. However, the design elements are highly impressive and the features offered are not too bad. If you just watch a traditional watch with the tag of a smartwatch, the Fossil Q54 Pilot might be for you. Otherwise, Timex Metropolitan+ is a better option.
