Review: Canon PowerShot SX620 HS

The Canon PowerShot SX620 HS was launched back in May of 2016 and the superzoom camera features a 20-megapixel BSI-CMOS based sensor. The dimensions of the sensor are 6.17 x 4.55 mm. The SX620 HS qualifies as a compact camera that does fairly well when it comes to image and video quality.

The high resolution sensor supports up to 20x optical zoom and image stabilization. The Canon PowerShot SX620 HS is a camera that does have some really interesting features, but the lack of even the basic ones really affect its overall appeal. The SX620 HS is sleek and easy to handle. Right from the first glance, you can make out that this is a compact camera with a very manageable size and weight.

The SX620 HS measures 97mm in length, 57mm in width and 28mm in height. This portable devices weighs 182 grams which makes it a camera of an average size in this category. The front view of the camera mainly reveals the camera lens. The shutter button is located on the top right corner of the device.

A dial is placed close to the shutter button which can be used to switch between various photography modes. However, the body of the SX620HS does not include any protection against environmental damage. Continuous shooting in water or dust can easily damage the lens of the camera.

If you are a fan of portrait photography, this camera is not for you! The high resolution sensor, image stabilization and the provision of a manual focus mode cannot cover up for the lack of a manual exposure mode. The small aperture size of the sensor does not’t make things any better.

Without a built-in viewfinder, it is difficult to shoot videos or click pictures conveniently. However, street photography is one of the strong suits of this camera. The manual focus and 25mm wide area coverage make it really convenient to shoot scenes or capture images on the street.

The compact body is quite easy to handle and even the small sensor does not prove as a big disadvantage in street photography. However, sport photography is not what the Canon PowerShot SX620 HS can handle. Even after being compact, the body is not really ergonomical.

The spontaneously changing angles in sports are not easy to capture due to the average shutter speed of 1/2000 seconds. The small sensor is not optimal for landscape photography, but daily photography is quite nice with this device. The maximum resolution supported is 5184 x 3888 pixels.

The lens is quite capable of shooting at wide angles and zoom can go up to 25x. In terms of videography, this camera can record full-HD videos at 30 frames per second. The 1920×1080 resolution of the Canon PowerShot SX620 HS is more than enough at most occasions. In terms of connectivity, there is inbuilt WiFi, NFC, a USB-port and an HDMI port as well. The battery can take around 295 shots on a single charge.

The pros of the Canon PowerShot SX620 HS are overshadowed by the cons. At this price range, better alternatives are available.

Price: $279 approx.
