AMD Radeon Vega Frontier Edition Announced For $999

AMD’s much-awaited series of graphics cards based on the new Vega architecture was first announced back in May without a price or a clear launch date in sight. However, AMD has now passed the confusion and provided all the missing details about the AMD Radeon Vega Frontier Edition.

The two graphics card will be launched first are the AMD Radeon Vega Frontier Edition, with air cooling, and liquid cooling variant. The air-cooled variant will be priced at $999, and the liquid cooled model will cost $1500. The air cooled version of AMD Radeon Vega Frontier Edition is available now and the liquid cooled version will be available in Q3, as per reports floating around.

Some media outlets have also reported that it looks like AMD is mostly focused on content creators, and the company has even encouraged gamers to wait for the AMD Radeon RX Vega series. AMD is also including dual-mode drivers for the card, so it can easily be flipped from pro applications like CAD and computing tasks over to video game acceleration. This makes the most sense for game and VR developers who need both types of acceleration on a daily basis.

However, this is not mainstream graphics card and is meant to compete against the NVIDIA Titan Xp. In fact, AMD doesn’t even talk about gaming with these cards; they have been designed primarily for computing applications, such as game development and VR development etc.

Currently, NewEgg has a pre-order listing for the AMD Radeon Vega Frontier Edition which says the release date is June 29th, but that order page is linked to directly by AMD’s “available today” announce post.  However, AMD is also coming up with more Vega-based Radeon RX Vega graphics cards for consumers later this year. It is reported that the gaming Vega card will be revealed in the Computex event.
