Review: Sennheiser SPORT True Wireless Earbuds

They say that music is always a good source of motivation while you do your daily workouts or other sports activities. And while there are many sports-based earbuds out there, you deserve the earbuds that are not only durable with a comfortable fit but also offer excellent audio quality. We got a chance to review the new Sennheiser SPORT True wireless earbuds and here are our thoughts about the new device.

Design

Sennheiser’s latest SPORT series wireless earbuds are the perfect music companion for those who want to use them during their workout sessions. The new earbuds carry the IP54 certification, indicating that the device is resistant to water splashes, dust, and more importantly, sweat. You won’t need to worry about your earbuds getting damaged due to environmental factors.

We like the design of the earbuds that feature a black matte finish and it feels premium when you hold them. In spite of its durable design, each of the earbuds weighs only 6.8g. There are also LED indicators on the back of the earbuds so this is a good indication to know if it’s turned on and connected. The charging case also receives the same black matt finish and has an LED indicator on the front side and a USB-C charging port on the rear side with a cover of its own. The carry case weighs only 41.6g.

The outer side of the earbuds features a flat surface with support for touch-based controls that allow users to pair them to their device, adjust the volume, activate voice assistant (compatible with Google Assistant and Siri), music playback controls, and more. The earbuds also come with a detachable arc-like extension called the ear fins. The whole purpose of this fin is to ensure that the earbuds remain secure with an ergonomic fit for your ears. The ear fins come in four different sizes that suit different users.

While most earbuds offer a closed-ear experience, Sennheiser offers two different variants of earbud adaptors for both open and closed-ear experiences. The open earbuds called the “Aware” are for those who want to know what’s going on in their surroundings (Example: car horns and barking dogs), while also reducing body-borne sounds such as your breathing, footsteps, and rattling of your clothes. The Aware buds are easily identified with their blue markings.

On the other hand, we have the closed-earbuds called the “Focus” that do the opposite by isolating the outside noise so you can stay fully immersed with your favorite music tracks while you work out in the gym or at home. This gives users the best of both worlds with the same device. Sennheiser will be including three different sizes each for its Focus and Aware ear adapters on the packing, along with the ear fins, lanyard cord for the carry case, a USB-A to USB-C cable, and the instruction manual.

Features

The new SPORTS True wireless from Sennheiser isn’t just made to be durable for sports and workouts but is also fine-tuned to deliver the brand’s signature audio quality for the best audio experience to its fullest, just as you would with any other premium headphone. The earbuds feature a 7mm dynamic audio driver called the Sennheiser TrueResponse transducer that delivers high-quality audio with amazing bass effects.

The technical jargons include the sound pressure level with a rating of 110 dB SPL and the total harmonic distortion which is < 0,08 % (1 kHz, 94 dB SPL). The transducer is capable of delivering audio tones that range between 5 Hz and 21 kHz, so you will be able to hear most of the details of your favorite music tracks. And as for the microphones, the frequency range is between 100Hz to 10 kHz. There are a total of four mics with two mic beamforming arrays.

There is also the Sennheiser Smart Control application that lets you choose preset EQs or customize it to your liking. The application also offers specialized modes when you wear either the Focus or Aware ear adapters. You will also be able to update the firmware of the earbuds via the mobile application. For wireless connectivity, the SPORTS True Wireless features the latest Bluetooth 5.2 for a very efficient and stable connection.

And when it comes to battery life, Sennheiser mentions that each of the earbuds features a 55 mAh battery that is capable of offering 9 hours of playtime. The charging case by itself also houses a 400 mAh battery that gives about 18 hours of playtime. This concludes with a total of 27 hours of battery life. You will also be able to achieve a full charge in approximately 1.5 hours. And if you are in a hurry, a 10-minute charge can give you an hour of playtime.

Verdict

For those looking for wireless earbuds that can be used during your daily routine of exercises, jogging, or sports sessions, we recommend using the new Sennheiser SPORT True wireless earbuds. The new earbuds feature a premium lightweight construction with the durability to resist splashes, dirt, and sweat. The ear fins ensure that the earbuds stay secure on your ears during a workout session. The earbuds feature touch-based controls and also offer Sennheiser signature-level audio quality, thanks to the 7mm dynamic audio driver.

The Smart Control application allows you to customize the audio with an equalizer. The device uses the latest Bluetooth 5.2 for a stable and efficient connection. Sennheiser has also included the specialized Focus and Aware ear adapters so users will be able to switch between for a closed or open-ear audio experience. The earbuds also work well with Google Assistant or Siri. And with the earbuds and the carry case combined, the battery life can easily last for a whole day or more.
