Review: Samsung S7 Edge

The stunning S7’s big brother, Samsung S7 edge, delivers the same level of performance in a larger screen. Taking inspiration from last year’s S6 edge, the S7 edge improves on the shortcomings of its predecessor. The design is similar to the S7, with the volume buttons and power button placed on each side.

The top houses the merged Nano SIM tray and Micro SD slots. Proving all rumors wrong, Samsung launched S7 edge without the USB C connector. The usual micro USB 2.0, which sits at the bottom of the device, serves the charging and USB connectivity purposes. The 5.5 inch curved edge screen is larger as compared to the S7’s 5.1 inch screen.

The display is a Super AMOLED capacitive type that delivers detailed and beautiful colors. The pixel density that measures as 534 pixels per inch is very impressive, and it is even higher than the acclaimed iPhone 6S. The ‘always on’ display mode makes use of the AMOLED screen technology, and enables the phone to show the time, date, battery percentage and similar information at all times without using much battery power.

A little more customization and tweaking options should have been available for this mode. The viewing angles of the screen are not so great either. Overall, the S7 Edge looks fantastic, and can even be called the best looking phone of 2016.

Samsung S7 edge is provided with different chips in different territories. While some areas have the phone available with the Exynos 8890, others get the Snapdragon 820 chipset. Both chips are extremely powerful, and can contend against the S7’s rivals with relative ease.

The Exynos 8890 version of the phone comes loaded with a Mali-T880 MP12 GPU, whereas the Snapdragon 820 chipset carries along the Adreno 530. Again, both the GPU’s are powerful enough to run 3D games and application effectively without heating up much. However, the Touchwiz UI does lag at rare moments, but this has nothing to do with the hardware.

The phone supports 4G, features Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth connectivity, GPS, and NFC as well. The 3600 mAh battery is huge, and the presence of quick charge 2.0 further diminishes battery related issues. Performance is definitely a strong suit for Samsung’s S7 Edge.

The rear packs a 12 megapixel shooter, which is a seemingly lower number when compared to last year’s S6 edge. But, there is a trick here; the 12 megapixels are actually ‘Dual Pixels’ which offer better quality. Low light images are especially amazing with the S7 Edge.

The ‘Dual Pixels’ enable the autofocus to work in a very efficient way. The f/1.7 aperture is also an impressive specification and its effect is highly visible in low light photos. The camera captures amazing outdoor shots, and even indoor shots are pretty detailed and vibrant.

The camera app is easy to use, and also provides an ‘expert mode’ for additional options. 4K video recording is supported, and full HD videos are captured at 60 fps. The 5 megapixel front shooter is great for selfies, and can work well in low lighting also, as it has the same aperture as the rear one. Simply put, S7 Edge is a delight when it comes to clicking pictures or recording videos.

If you like flagship phone with larger screen sizes, the S7 Edge is the best option available in the market.
