Dynabook makes some great robust laptops that are lightweight and meant for business users. We got to try the new Dynabook PORTÉGÉ X30W-J-10V, a 2-in-1 convertible laptop that features the latest Intel chipsets, great display, and more.
Design
We have come across several convertible laptops that feature a thin body profile in a lightweight chassis and the Dynabook PORTÉGÉ X30W-J-10V is no exception here. The dimensions of the laptop are 303.9 x 197.4 x 17.9 mm and the weight of the laptop is only 989g. It may be a tad bit heavier than the Dynabook Portégé X30L-G-10L that we had previously reviewed that weighed 870g. However, we can assure you that the PORTÉGÉ X30W-J-10V is still one of the lightest you can find in the market. We also like the Mystic Blue color of the laptop.
The laptop features a durable magnesium alloy chassis that has passed through stress tests such as the MIL-STD-810G and the HALT (Highly Accelerated Life Test), ensuring that the device is capable of handling accidental drops or shocks. The laptop features a 13.3-inch non-reflective IGZO touchscreen IPS panel with Corning Gorilla Glass protection. The display also comes with Full HD resolution that’s commonly used among users and the screen has a matt finish to evade reflections. The display has very thin and narrow bezels to make use of the entire screen estate. The viewing angles of the IPS display are fantastic when we look from the sides and this matters since it’s a convertible laptop.
The screen also features a maximum of 470 nits of brightness to ensure colors are vibrant and the display is visible in outdoor situations. The color temperature of the screen appears to be a bit cool. There is also an HD webcam on the top portion with dual mics for Cortana and Skype. For privacy concerns, there is a webcam shutter slider to close the camera when it’s not used. The video quality of the front-facing camera is just subpar as compared to the second camera of the laptop.
Yes, you read that right. The PORTÉGÉ X30W-J-10V has a second camera that is located on the top portion of the keyboard. The camera features an 8MP sensor with support for touch autofocus. And the video quality is comparatively better than the front-facing camera. However, the second camera does not have a privacy shutter like the front camera. Dynabook calls the second camera the world-facing camera that features anti-reflection coating and has support for next-generation AR applications. We wish that Dynabook would have used the 8MP on the front-facing camera too for better video quality.
You can switch between the two cameras just as you would with a smartphone. There is also a blue LED indicator placed next to both the cameras so you can be aware if any of the cameras are active. We also had a good typing experience with the keyboard. The frameless keyboard features large 16x15mm backlit keys that have a soft surface. We got quickly used to the keyboard without much fuss. However, some of the keys such as the directional keys and page up/down appear to be a bit small and cramped. While the trackpad may be small in size, the surface of the trackpad provides a “glass-feel” experience.
We are glad that Dynabook did not skip on the connectivity as some brands do for their premium thin-and-light laptops. Most of the ports are located on the left side of the laptop which includes two USB 3.1 TypeC Gen 2 Thunderbolt 4 ports for both fast data transfers, Display Port connection and power delivery, one full-sized HDMI port with support for 4K, a headphone jack, and a slot for Secure Cable Lock. On the right side, you will find a MicroSD card reader, a side-mounted power button, and one USB 3.1 port with support for charging devices even when the laptop is put to sleep.
The laptop also features Harman Kardon stereo speakers that are located underneath the palm rest portion of the keyboard. The speakers are optimized with Dolby Atmos for premium acoustics. The maximum volume isn’t very loud as you would expect but it does the job. The air vents are also seen underneath the laptop and also on the rear side.
Dynabook also includes a battery-powered Universal Stylus Pen with Wacom AES 2.0 Pen Technology. However, the laptop does not have a dedicated slot to place the stylus and carry it on the go.
Specifications
Along with its impressive build, the Dynabook PORTÉGÉ X30W-J-10V we got for review features the Intel 11th generation i5-1135G7 processor with 8GB LPDDR4X RAM clocked at 4266 MHz speeds. The laptop does feature a modest and fast Samsung 256GB PCIe NVMe SSD (MZVLQ256HAJD-00000) on board with Windows 10 Pro installed. The processor is also armed with Iris Xe integrated GPU to handle the visuals. The laptop also uses the Intel WiFi 6 AX201 module for high-speed internet.
While 8GB DDR4 may be enough for some basic operations, we think Dynabook should have equipped the laptop with at least 16GB of RAM. Business users often open a lot of browsers, Word, Excel, and other applications at once and that requires more room for memory. The good news is that the laptop is also available with an i7 processor and up to 32GB of RAM. That said, the Dynabook PORTÉGÉ X30W-J-10V ran smoothly most of the time during our usage. We ran some benchmarks including PC Mark 10 Extended, 3D Mark FireStrike, Geekbench 5 CPU and GPU tests, CrystalDiskMark for the SSD, and Cinebench R23 for CPU performance. Check out the scores below.
Benchmarks
Battery
The Dynabook PORTÉGÉ X30W-J-10V houses a 4-cell lithium-ion battery with a 16-hour life (MobileMark 2014 running on Windows 10). However, we had done a battery test using the PC Mark 10 Extended battery test and the laptop lasted up to 10 hours and 15 minutes. In real-world scenarios, the laptop is capable of lasting for a day of use while surfing the web, doing editorial jobs, office work, video calls, watching YouTube videos, and more. The laptop also supports fast charge where it can fill 40% of the battery in just 30 minutes.
Verdict
Dynabook has once again impressed us with their thin-and-light business laptops. The PORTÉGÉ X30W-J-10V 2-in-1 convertible comes in a stylish and durable chassis. The 13.3-inch IPS display offers great viewing angles and colors. The front-facing camera also features a camera shutter for those concerned about privacy and there is a world-facing camera on the keyboard portion for AR applications.
The laptop also features numerous connectivity ports, including USB-C with support for charging and a full-sized HDMI port. The performance of the laptop is also good enough for basic workloads and there are faster configurations available. The battery of the laptop also easily lasts over 10 hours of use and also features fast charge that can achieve 40% in just half an hour.
