Review: Infinix Zero 5

Coming in from Tecno Mobile’s stable, the Zero 5 is the latest flagship from the brand Infinix. The launch event was conducted with much fanfare and the company announced two different variations of the device – 64GB storage + 6GB RAM, and 128GB storage + 6GB RAM.

Design
The variation I received for review comes with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. Infinix has given lots of thought to the design and build quality of the Zero 5. The Zero 5 features a metal body and top notch design and build quality.

On the front, you get a 5.98-inch touchscreen display with a resolution of 1080-by-1920 pixels. While rumours initially expected the Zero 5 to come with a 18:9 aspect ratio, thus giving you a bezel-less display, that isn’t the case with the finished product.

On the top of the display, you get a 16-megapixel front shooter for selfies. Though there is enough area to fit a fingerprint scanner below the display, Infinix has opted to move the fingerprint scanner to the rear of the device.

On the rear, on top of the fingerprint scanner, you will find a dual camera setup. The Zero 5’s rear dual camera uses both a 12-megapixel wide-angle lens and a 13-megapixel telephoto lens. The rear camera also comes with a 2x optical zoom and 5x digital zoom, and an f/2.0 aperture.

On the left edge of the Zero 5, you get a micro SD card slot, which the company claims will be able to accommodate cards with up to 128GB of storage space. On the right edge you get a dual SIM slot that takes in two micro SIMs. You also get a volume rocker and the power button on the right edge.

On the bottom edge of the device, you get a USB-C port for all your charging and data syncing requirements. You also get a microphone, a 3.5mm audio jack and the speaker grille.

Specifications
The Infinix Zero 5 runs Android 7.0 and is powered by a 4350mAh non removable battery. Under the hood, the phone is powered by 2.6GHz octa-core MediaTek Helio P25 processor and it comes with 6GB of RAM. The phone, as mentioned before, packs 64GB of internal storage that can be expanded up to 128GB via a microSD card.

The Infinix Zero 5 is a dual SIM (GSM and GSM) smartphone that accepts Micro-SIM and Micro-SIM. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, FM, 3G and 4G. Sensors on the phone include Proximity sensor, Accelerometer, Ambient light sensor and Gyroscope.

Performance
I ran the trusted AnTuTu benchmark on the Infinix Zero 5 and ended up with a very mid-range performance of 65033 points. On Geekbench, I recorded 882 points as the single-core score and 3935 points as the multi-core score.

The overall performance of the phone is quite good for something that is priced at a very affordable AED 999. Multi-Tasking is as smooth as a hot knife on butter. Switching through multiple open app windows was a walk in the park and I did not find any lags when doing so.

Camera is a major plus point of the Infinix Zero 5. The 18-megapixel front camera was a able to take some amazing selfies with a bokeh effect. Under good lighting conditions I ended up with very good pictures. The dual cameras at the rear also performed well under good lighting condition, though noise started creeping in, on images shot under low light conditions.

Verdict
At a price point of AED 999, Infinix offers a dual camera, a full HD 5.98-inch display with Gorilla Glass protection. The front camera is brilliant – it can do a bokeh effect much better than many phones on the market that promise depth of field effect. The Infinix Zero 5 can very well be your primary phone, available at a very affordable price point.
