Huawei officially unveils the Mate 40, Mate 40 Pro and Mate 40 Pro Plus flagship smartphones

Huawei has officially finally taken the wraps off its latest smartphones of the Mate 40 series and has introduced a trio of devices that includes the Huawei Mate 40, the Mate Mate 40 Pro, and the Mate 40 Pro Plus flagship smartphones, featuring the first 5nm SoC with 5G capabilities, better camera performances, new design and more.

The new Mate series of smartphones features OLED display panels with rounded corners. The Mate 40, which is the base model, holds a 6.5-inch OLED display with a screen resolution of 2376 x 1080 pixels. The Mate 40 Pro and the Mate 40 Pro Plus variant features a larger 6.76-inch OLED panel and has a screen resolution of 2772 x 1344 pixels. Huawei does mention on its official spec sheet that the screen resolution is slightly lower when you count the rounded design of the display. That said, both the Mate 40 Pro and the Mate 40 Pro+ does come with a refresh rate up to 90 Hz. During the event, Huawei mentions that it was very easy for them to clock the refresh rate to 120Hz for the new models. However, the company decided to stick to 90Hz, since 120Hz panels consume a lot of battery life. Huawei states that the 90Hz is the perfect balance for the user who wants to experience a smooth user interface while not impacting battery life.

The base Mate 40 smartphone is 8.8mm thick and weighs approximately 188g. The bigger Mate 40 Pro smartphone is slightly thicker at 9.1mm and weighs heavier at 212g. The Mate 40 Pro Plus smartphone has a thickness of 8.8mm and has a weight of 230g. All three smartphone does feature splash and water resistance with IP68 certification. One of the common things between the three devices is the new and powerful Huawei Kirin 9000 5G SoC. Huawei claims it’s the first 5nm processor with an integrated 5G modem in the market. The chip comes in an octa-core CPU configuration, featuring a single Cortex A77 performance cores clocked at 3.13GHz speeds, another three Cortex A77 cores clocked at a slightly lower 2.54GHz speeds, and four Cortex A55 cores clocked at 2.05GHz speeds as power-efficient cores. The NPU (Neural-network Processing Unit) of the chipset comes in dual Big core and tiny core configuration.

The chip also packs the 24-core Mali G78 which delivers over 50% better performance than the Adreno GPU of the Snapdragon 865+ processor from Qualcomm. However, the Mate 40 actually has the Kirin 9000E variant that packs a 22-core Mali G78 GPU. The smartphone runs on Android 10 OS but with Huawei’s EMUI 11 software. The Mate 40 comes in 128GB and 256GB capacities with 8GB RAM. The Mate 40 Pro comes in 256GB capacity and 8GB RAM. The Mate 40 Pro Plus also comes in 256GB capacity but with a larger 12GB RAM.

The most notable changes between the three smartphones are in the camera department. The new devices come with a “Space Ring” design where the camera lenses are placed around the ring and not inside the circle. The Mate 40 features three different cameras, with the main shooter packing a 50MP image sensor with F1.9 as its aperture. Huawei mentions that the 50MP Ultra Vision shooter has an image sensor size of 1/1.28″, which means the sensor can collect more light and information to deliver better image quality, colors, and low-light capability. The second camera is a 16MP sensor for ultra-wide angle shots and with an aperture of F2.2 (also can be used for macro shots), along with the 8MP telephoto shooter with OIS and F2.4 as the aperture.

The Mate 40 Pro, on the other hand, also comes with the 50MP shooter, but the rest of the cameras are different from the Mate 40 base model. The second camera of the Mate 40 Pro features a 12MP telephoto shooter with F3.4 as its aperture with support for OIS. The third camera is a 20MP Cine shooter with F1.8 for ultra-wide shots. The Mate 40 Pro Plus model comes with a more advanced camera configuration with a total of 4 cameras and one 3D depth-sensing camera. The Mate 40 Pro+ sports the 50MP main camera and the 12MP telephoto shooter, along with another telephoto camera with an 8MP sensor and with F4.4 aperture. Then comes the 20MP camera sensor for ultra-wide shots. There is also the ToF camera for depth sensing capabilities. The cameras are backed with Leica-based lens enhancements.

The new devices are capable of 4K video recording at 60fps. While the rear-facing cameras are different between the new smartphones, they all have the same selfie sensor. The front-facing shooter packs a 13MP sensor with F2.0 as its aperture. However, the Mate 40 Pro and Pro+ comes with a front-facing depth-sensing camera. Huawei mentions that the new cameras come with a “free-form lens” that is designed to sort out the barrel distortion effects when shooting wide-angle photos.

As for the battery, the Mate 40 comes with a 4200 mAh battery with support for 40W SuperCharge. However, the base model does not come with wireless charging capability. That said, the Mate 40 Pro and its plus variant house a 4400 mAh battery with support for 66W SuperCharge. Unlike the base model, the Pro models do feature wireless charging support up to 50W. The new smartphones come with a fingerprint scanner that is integrated within the main display. The Pro models also feature the Face Unlock capability.
