Apple announces the new iPhone 13, iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max smartphones

Apple has officially updated its iPhone lineup with the launch of the new iPhone 13, the iPhone 13 mini, the iPhone 13 Pro, and the iPhone 13 Pro Max, featuring a familiar design but with several internal changes with respect to performance.

While the design of the iPhone 13 and the mini variant almost remains the same with its flat edges and rounded corners, IP68 metal body, the notch on the display is now 20% smaller than previous models for more screen estate. The main screen size is still the same though, 5.4-inch OLED on the iPhone 13 mini and a 6.1-inch OLED on the iPhone 13. That said, the displays now offer 28% more brightness that reaches up to 800 nits for outdoor and up to 1200 nits for peak HDR brightness.

However, the refresh rate on both devices is still 60Hz. The cameras on the iPhone 13 and the mini variant do get an upgrade. The main shooter features the same 12MP sensor found on the iPhone 12 Pro Max. The camera features sensor-shift stabilization, 1.7um pixels, and a 26mm lens with f/1.6 as its aperture. The second 12MP camera for ultra-wide shots also receives a new sensor but the AF performance isn’t the same as the Pro models. The front 12MP TrueDepth camera on the iPhone 13 and mini models now has support for the Centre Stage feature that helps users follow a subject automatically on the frame.

The iPhone 13 series comes powered by the Apple A15 bionic processor, which Apple claims is the fastest SoC ever made for any smartphone. The A15 bionic has two high-performance cores and four power-efficient cores and the GPU varies between the vanilla models and the Pro variants. The SoC on the iPhone 13 and the mini version gets four GPU cores, while the iPhone 13 Pro and the iPhone 13 Pro Max receive five GPU cores. The Neural Engine is now 16-cores that supports features such as on-device voice and image recognition, along with advanced machine learning.

While the iPhone 13 Pro and Max models still have the same 6.1-inch  and 6.7-inch display sizes, the devices now come with the ProMotion feature that brings refresh rates as low as 10Hz and up to 120Hz. The main 12MP camera on the Pro models now has a 1.9um pixel size and a faster aperture of f/1.5. The telephoto camera now comes with a new focal length of 77mm and with an aperture of f/2.8 lens. The ultrawide camera also receives an upgrade with its new 6-element f/1.8 aperture lens.

The new Pro models now bring support for the Apple professional video codec called ProRes video. Users will be able to edit  4K ProRes videos within the device itself. Apple also mentioned that the new iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini come with bigger batteries, giving about 2.5 hours and 1.5 hours of extra work time, respectively. But that has also slightly increased the overall weight of the devices to 174g on the iPhone 13 and 141g on the mini model. The same goes for the iPhone 13 Pro and the Pro Max models get a similar battery update.

The new Apple iPhone 13 and the iPhone 13 mini will come in Pink, Blue, Midnight, Starlight, and Product RED colors, along with storage options of 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB options. The iPhone 13 and mini will be sold with a starting price of 2999 AED and 3399 AED, respectively. The Apple iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max models will come in Sierra Blue, Silver, Gold, and Graphite colors, along with similar storage options and a new 1TB option. The prices start at 4199 AED. Preorders will start on 17th September and the devices will be available on 24th September 2021 in the UAE.
