Review: Prestigio Multipad 2 Ultra Duo 8.0 3G

In a market that is already saturated with hordes of tablets available – some cheap, some mid-level and some premium – finding the right tablet certainly becomes a task. In this overcrowded market, Prestigio has launched its new 8-inch Ultra Multipad 2 Duo 8.0 3G (quite a mouthful!) tablet at a price tag of AED 899. The tablet does have a refreshing design and a good build quality.

The Multipad 2 Ultra Duo 8.0 3G is a device that is aimed at young adults, business users, and even women, because it portrays a modern look and feel – at least better than most second tier tablets on the market. The device comes packed in a small and neat-looking package. Inside the box, you will find a white artificial leather holster, a charger, microUSB and USB-OTG cables, and a quick start guid in multpile languages, along with the tablet itself.

The device and the accessories it accompanies are white in colour. The Prestigio Multipad 2 Duo Ultra 8.0 3G is built into a stylish metal casing, while the front is made of white plastic. The tablet weighs just 450-gms, comes packed with a Dual-Core processor, and runs Android OS 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich).

As mentioned earlier, the tablet also comes with an 8-inch screen, which is protected by reflective panels. Though the screen is quite bright and crystal clear to look at, usage in direct sunlight may hamper the viewing quality. Having said that, the resolution of the screen is 1024-by-768 at a 160-ppi pixel density. The device offers excellent viewing angles, with crisp and clean colours. So playing games, browsing the internet or getting work done is a pleasant experience.

On the back side of the unit, you will find the main camera that comes with a 2-megapixel image sensor, while the front camera offers just VGA quality. Picture quality was average. The device also comes with 1GB of DDR3 RAM, 8GB internal storage capacity, and a microSD slot that supports cards with the storage capacities of up to 32GB. Since the tablet also supports SIM cards, you can get connected to 3G for internet access using an appropriate data bundle.

Setup was easy and using the tablet is quite intuitive. However, while playing games or switching between applications for instance, we did find the tablet struggling to keep up at times. A price tag of AED 899 is also quite expensive. Prestigio claims that the tablet’s non-removable 4600 mAh battery provides up to 120 hours of standby time and up to 5 hours of multimedia use. In our real world tests, we were able to eke out 4.5 hours of multimedia use before the tablet gave up the ghost.

All in all, though the Prestigio Multipad 2 Ultra Duo 8.0 3G comes with a refreshingly new design and build quality, backed by a brilliant skin over Android OS 4.0, the steep price tag might turn out to be a roadblock.
