Review: Belkin WeMo Switch+Motion

If you are in the process of setting up a digital home, you might want to check out Belkin’s WeMo Switch+Motion. This little bundle of tech awesomeness is allows you to wirelessly control your home appliances and electronics. In addition, the “Motion” part of the device bundle is actually a motion-sensing device that turns devices of your choice on or off as soon as movement is detected.

The sensor plugs into an outlet and detects motion up to 10 feet away. It then sends a wireless signal to the WeMo Switch to turn the connected device either on or off. All this can be configured and controlled through iOS and Android devices by using the free WeMo App. For instance, you can now program a light to turn on when you walk into the house! And it’s pretty simple to set it up, too.

Setting up the devices is easy – just plug in the self-contained unit into an electrical outlet, connect a light or an appliance, then pair the WeMo to your smartphone over Wi-Fi. Once all of this is done, you will now vbe able to switch on lights (or any other appliance connected to the Switch) on and off, without leaving the comfort of your bed or wherever you are at home. The WeMo Motion part of the bundle connects and configures similarly.

In addition, the WeMo Switch+Motion also comes with IFTTT integration. IFTTT (which means If This Then That) is essentially a service that allows you to connect different web applications (such as Facebook, Evernote, Weather, Dropbox, and so on) together through simple conditional statements known as “Recipes”. Using this, you can connect the WeMo app to your Free IFTTT account, which really opens up possible automation options.

Here are a few examples of popular recipes, found on IFTTT. Some of those things can be done without using IFTTT, but some of the more advanced toggles are definitely cool:

Since the WeMo Switch+Motion bundle is modular, it allows you to control as much or as little of your house as you like. If you want to control more appliances, you can add an additional WeMo Switch to provide control of more areas of your home. Additionally, multiple switches can be linked to one sensor – you can turn on a light and heater or a set of lights at the same time with only one sensor.

We tried using the WeMo Switch+Motion using an Android phone and we were amazed by the performance. The device really makes it easy to set schedules for home appliances and electronics and turn devices on and off remotely. The Motion sensor meanwhile, detects movement up to 10 feet away and wirelessly signals the WeMo Switch to turn the connected device on or off, depending on your preference.
