Apple and Google to end patent war

Technology giants Apple and Google have agreed to drop their lawsuits against each other, which exist directly between the two firms, and work together to reform patent law.

Lawsuits related to patents regarding Google’s Motorola Mobility handset unit will be dismissed. The deal does not include Apple’s patent disputes with Samsung Electronics, which uses Google’s Android software for its mobile devices.

Apple and Google have about 20 lawsuits against each other in the U.S. and Europe, and have been spending millions of dollars over litigation. Apple’s iOS software and Google’s Android are used in most smartphones and tablets globally.

The move could be viewed as a new strategy by Apple to intensify its litigation activities on Samsung, as it is the largest Android phone maker.
