Review: Call of Duty: Ghosts for Xbox One

The Call of Duty series has always been one of the few “must-have” titles for Xbox gaming consoles for years now. The latest edition, Call of Duty: Ghosts is no different. This new chapter in the Call of Duty franchise features a new dynamic where players are on the side of a crippled nation fighting not for freedom, or liberty, but simply to survive.

The newest addition to the overall franchise looks better than it ever has on the new Xbox One console. Depending on where you sit with the additions and subtractions to the modes, weapons, and maps in the annual shooter, Call of Duty: Ghosts is yet again a solid outing from Infinity Ward. The visuals and effects of the game are now sharper, with a more colorful punch to it on both the single player campaign and online modes.

The game features an all-new cast of characters which is all wrapped up in next-gen graphics. In this latest iteration, the lead character Logan and his brother are caught up in a conflict that sees the United States threatened by a foreign attacker. The game is set in an alternate timeline that follows the nuclear destruction of the Middle East.

The oil-producing nations of South America form “the Federation” in response to the ensuing global economic crisis and quickly grow into a global superpower, swiftly invading and conquering Central America and the Caribbean. The game’s main protagonists are the Ghosts, a force of U.S. Special Operations personnel trained to conduct clandestine missions behind enemy lines.

The unit is led by retired U.S. Army Captain Elias Walker (Stephen Lang). He is joined by his sons Logan and David “Hesh” Walker (Brandon Routh), along with a trained German Shepherd named Riley, Captain Thomas A. Merrick (Jeffrey Pierce), and Sergeant Keegan P. Russ (Brian Bloom). So, in the game, South America is attacking the US from space, and within minutes of switching on the game you will find yourself splattering blood in zero gravity.

In Call of Duty: Ghosts, the story is mostly told through the eyes of one single character, Logan Walker. Players assume the role of Logan for most of the game, with several other playable characters, including an astronaut specialist named Baker, and Logan’s father, Elias Walker. The multiplayer mode offers more features such as the “Create-a-Soldier”.

In the new Create-A-Soldier system, players can change the physical appearance of their soldier by choosing the head, body type, head-gear and equipment, and for the first time in a Call of Duty game, the player can also choose their gender. With 20,000 possible combinations, we believe this is by far the most flexible and comprehensive character customisation in Call of Duty history.

New dynamic maps are also available in the multiplayer mode. These include interactive elements and player triggered events that make the environment evolve as each match goes on. The entire landscape can shift and force players to change tactics and strategies. In addition, Call of Duty: Ghosts introduces new tactical player movements. The new contextual lean system now allows players to lean around obstacles without adding button combinations or fully leaving cover.

The game also delivers over 20 new Kill Streaks – such as Juggernaut Maniac, the Helo Scout, the Vulture and the ODIN Strike. Players can even bring in guard dog Riley, from the single-player campaign, to protect and also to attack enemies. There are also over 30 new weapons, including an entirely new weapon class: Marksman Rifles.

When it comes to gameplay, Call of Duty : Ghosts looks so much nicer on next-gen gaming consoles such as the Xbox One. The game runs at 60 FPS frame rate, and that brings in a whole new meaning to the words “first impression”. The visual improvements are very good, while the map design and uniquely different play style from previous iterations are plus points.

The Multiplayer mode on the game is still rock-solid. There are so amany cooperative modes you can get into, to tackle with friends. Single player mode is also quite good. All in all, Call of Duty: Ghosts is a blast to play on Microsoft’s new Xbox One. If you are into first-person-shooters and the Call of Duty series, you will love Call of Duty: Ghosts.
