Review: Yotaphone 2

The first Yotaphone drummed up a buzz with its radical dual display. The Russian company is once again out with a second version of the Yotaphone. The Yotaphone 2 looks and feels incredible. The e-ink screen at the back is quite good and is covered by a matte Gorilla glass for improved protection.

Considering the gadget has two screens, its exceptionally amazing that the gadget is still pretty much slim and light as every one of those leading smartphones out there on the market with single displays. The Yotaphone 2 is only 8.9mm thick.

The Yotaphone concept is extremely straightforward. On the front is a Full HD 5-inch AMOLED screen and at the back is an e-ink screen as mentioned before. The second screen isn’t only for reading your ebooks on the go either. It can display notifications, messages and other useful info. Moreover, you can check notifications simply by touching the screen.

Due to the use of the e-ink screen, the battery life of the Yotaphone 2 increases tremendously. Since the e-ink screen is constantly on, offering everytiing from notifications to messages to accessing apps, the overall battery life increases in turn.

The e-ink screen looks great when checking for notifications and the time. In addition, it also allows you to play games such as chess and sudoku, personalise it with live wallpapers and widgets.

Connectivity options on the Yotaphone 2 inclue 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, NFC and 4G LTE. The phone derives its computing power from a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor which we’ve seen in most flagship smartphones on the market. In addition, the specs of the Yotaphone 2 include 3GB RAM and 32GB of storage capacity.

The phone also comes with a 8-megapixel camera with an LED flash unit that lets you take some good looking images and videos. As for the operating system, Yota went with Android 4.4 Kitkat for the Yotaphone 2, without any skin or modification.

Performance of the Yotaphone 2 is good – we liked the fact that it comes with an AMOLED screen on the front and an e-ink display at the back. We also like that Yota now lets you fire up apps from the e-ink screen as well. The price though is on the higher side, especially for a brand which is quite new on the market. If the company can work out a “sweetspot price”, they might be able to acquire a fan-following.

Price: AED 3000 approx.
