Review: Oppo F1 Plus

Oppo F1 Plus is another edition to Oppo’s line up of ‘selfie expert’ smartphones. Thankfully, the plus tag does not include merely a bigger screen and an improved camera over the Oppo F1. The Oppo F1 plus brings along many new features as well. The Oppo F1 Plus shares a lot of design elements with the current generation on iPhone.

However, the design is a full copy of Apple’s design. The basic aesthetics of the current iPhone merged with some innovation creates a very satisfying design for the Oppo F1 plus. The phone features a metal body with glass edges rounded at the ends. The phone is extremely delightful to hold and weighs just 145g. The 5.5 inch full-HD Amoled screen is gorilla glass 4 protected.

The pixel density, colours and details are not disappointing at all. The home button doubles up as the fingerprint sensor. Oppo has provided a fast and efficient fingerprint scanner in F1 plus. Alongside the home button are some capacitive touch buttons that are backlit.

Either side accommodates the volume rockers and the power button. Their placing is quite comfortable which makes the phone quite handy. The nano SIM cum SD card tray sits on the right side of the phone. The back is quite classy and accommodates the rear camera bump and an Oppo logo. The finish is smooth, but a bit slippery. On the whole, the design of Oppo F1 plus is impressive.

The phone’s hardware is not the usual configuration most flagship phones use nowadays. However, the performance level is still quite competitive. The phone runs on MT6755 octa-core SoC/Helio P10 coupled with 4GB of RAM. The GPU offered in this phone is the Mali T860 GPU.

The internal storage provided in Oppo F1 plus is 64GB. The phone provides mostly all forms of connectivity including Wi-Fi, 4G, Bluetooth 4.0, USB on the go, Wi-Fi Direct, Miracast and GPS. The absence of NFC is felt at this price range. The phone runs on Android 5.1 based Colour OS 3.0.

The interface feels fresh when compared to previous Oppo phones. A Marshmallow update is expected to be released soon. The phone speaker is loud enough and thus provides up to the mark call quality. The phone performs quite well and is capable of handling about anything on the app store. Media files also run pretty smooth. The only glitch observed is while playing 4K video files.

The whole marketing of the phone is based on the quality of its front camera. The 16 megapixel camera with an aperture of f/2.0 captures highly detailed images in natural lighting. However, the same quality is not observed when lighting is artificial. Images captured at night are dull and unimpressive.

The 13 megapixel rear camera comes with an aperture of f/2.2. It also captures detailed images even under low lighting. However, the best quality is observed in natural settings only. Noise is easily observed while zooming. It would be unfair to say that Oppo F1 plus fails to deliver on its promise of providing an incredible selfie camera. However, at a slightly higher price range, better ones are available.

The Oppo F1 plus is a decent phone offered at a decent price. It delivers on its promise of providing a great front camera. It is definitely a strong contender in the market.
