Review: Acer Aspire S 13

If portability and performance are what you want, Acer Aspire S 13 will prove to be a great laptop for you. The design of this laptop is quite unique and it does not simply feel like a MacBook Rip off. The laptop owes the originality in its design to the textured cover with a nano-imprint.

Rather than going the usual silver route, the Acer Aspire S 13 features a black body. The 13 inch display is surrounded by a plastic bezel and the rubber paint makes the bottom of the machine quite soft. Weighing 2.9 pounds, the Acer Aspire S 13 is an extremely light device that makes it perfect for people who travel a lot. The thin and portable laptop is well suited for students also. The full-HD 13 inch display is available with and without a touch panel.

Talking about the quality of the display, the viewing angles are the only thing that failed to hit the mark. The 327 nits of brightness make it fairly easy to use the machine outdoors, even in bright sunlight. Acer has also incorporated a bluelight shield setting that can be turned on if the device is to be used for a long time.

The bluelight shield reduces the amount of strain in the eyes caused by the laptop’s display. Connectivity is not an issue with the Acer Aspire S 13 as the laptop features 2 USB 3.0 ports, a headphone/mic jack, a HDMI port, a SD card slot and the latest USB-C type connector. The backlit keyboard is quite comfortable to type with and a regular use might be able to type about 70 words per minute. The precision trackpad is not as smooth as it should have been and occasional stutters can be easily observed.

The standard variant of the Acer Aspire S 13 is powered by the latest i5 Skylake processor. The 6th gen i5-6200U is backed up 8 Gigabytes of RAM. The device features a 256GB Solid State Drive as well. An Acer Aspire S 13 also comes in an i7 variant. The SSD is super-fast and is undoubtedly better than the internal storage options in other laptops. Talking about general performance, the i7 variant is obviously faster than the i5 variant.

The i7 variant also features a larger hard drive and better viewing angles. A 512GB hard drive is provided in the i7 variant of the Acer Aspire S 13. There is no dedicated graphics card provided in this device. The Intel HD 520 is responsible for running all graphic intense applications and games.

Hardcore gaming is not what this device is made for. However, even the i5 variant can efficiently handle web browsing and multi-tasking. The webcam boasts a resolution of 720p. The quality is pretty decent which makes the Acer Aspire S 13 a great device for video calling. Windows 10 runs perfectly fine on this device.

The battery can sustain for about 9.5 hours if the usage is restricted to web browsing at a mediocre brightness level. About 10 hours of battery life is achievable at lower brightness levels. The design of the Acer Aspire S 13 is a breath of fresh air, the performance is quite good, the battery life is satisfactory and the display is amazing. It is one of the best laptops in the market for those who are looking for high portability.
