Review: ZOTAC Geforce GTX 1080 AMP Extreme

EditorsChoiceEver since the advent of the Nvidia GTX 1080 cards, computer gaming has been revolutionized. The various versions developed by Nvidia’s partners make the already amazing graphics processor even better. The ZOTAC Geforce GTX 1080 AMP Extreme is one such version of the customized GTX 1080 cards.

The AMP range of graphic cards offered by ZOTAC is known for providing the very best performance of the base graphic card. With Competitors like MSI and ASUS already having customized versions of the GTX 1080 in the market, it is interesting to see what new the ZOTAC Geforce GTX 1080 AMP Extreme has to offer.

The standard version of the GTX 1080 implements a 5+1 design in power phases. However, this customized version makes use of a customized printed circuit board (PCB) which implements the 8+2 power phases design. Instead of one PCI connector, the AMP Extreme version of the GTX 1080 features not one, but two 8-pin PCI ports.

Likewise, the amount of power consumer by the card is also higher than that of the founder’s edition. The AMP Extreme can churn up to 270 Watts of power. Connectivity is not a problem with this card as it includes one dual-link DVI, three DisplayPorts and one HDMI port. The ‘Carbon ExoArmor’ reduces vibrations in the card and consequently reduces the level of noise.

The fans are provided with the ‘dual blade’ design that enables air to flow more freely and also increases the pressure in the downward direction. What’s special about this technology is that it does all that without causing any addition in the level of noise. The three fans used by ZOTAC sit right above the aluminum heat-sink arrangement.

The AMP Extreme version of the GTX 1080 features a much higher clock speed than the Founder’s edition manufactured by Nvidia. The ZOTAC Geforce GTX 1080 AMP Extreme runs on a boost clock speed of 1,911MHz. This is the speed delivered by the card right out of the box, without any tweaking. However, ZOTAC does provide a tool called FIRESTORM that can be used to tweak this GPU.

Just like other cards in the AMP Extreme series, the ZOTAC Geforce GTX 1080 AMP Extreme is an extremely powerful card. The rebooted Tomb Raider (2013) managed to get around 192 frames per second at Full-HD resolution. 128.6 frames per second were achieved when the game was run in QHD resolution.

When the resolution was set to 4K, the frame rate observed was about 64 frames per second. The graphic settings were all set to ultimate in this test. Even at the extreme graphics preset and 4K resolution, Sleeping Dogs managed to run at 43.5 frames per second. At QHD, the frame rate was 100 fps and at full-HD, the game ran at about 149 frames per second. GTA V was astonishingly fast. AT 4K resolution and the highest possible settings, the game was playable at 70.6 frames per second.

Well, the ZOTAC Geforce GTX 1080 AMP Extreme is the fastest GPU in the market at the moment. If you want the absolute best, this is it!
