When it comes to the biggest names in high-end gaming headsets, you cannot miss Astro Gaming. The company’s latest creation in high-end gaming audio accessories is the Astro A40 TR and MixAmp Pro. This is a wired headset with a separate amp/mixer, which comes in at a price tag of AED 999.

Geekay Games is the distributor of the Astro Gaming range of devices in the region and they were awesome enough to send us a Mod Kit as well along with the review unit. The Mod Kit itself costs AED 249. Of course, looking at the price tag, you certainly cannot call them cheap, but then, if you need high-end audio with your gaming, Astro Gaming is definitely one of the top choices available on the market.

The Astro A40 TR is essentially the third generation of the much-acclaimed A40 headset. The new iteration features the same top-notch build quality, features, and audio performance, which the A40 was known for. Place the Astro A40 TR headset on your head and you can tell that it fits firmly, but not so much as to compress your head to stay on.

The headset comes with adjustable angles and it never felt loose with movement. In terms of colour, the version we received for review was the of the pearl white variety, with a grayish tint all over. The A40 TR is also available in two models: Xbox One/PC and PS4/PS3/PC. The one we received for review was the Xbox One/PC version.

The A40 TR is a wired headset, with generous cabling to allow for long-distance gaming, or for something up-close and personal. Using USB and optical audio, the ASTRO A40 TR delivered brilliant 7.1 Dolby Surround Sound to your ear canals with little to no lag or interference. If you are into serious FPS you will thank Astro Gaming for building such an awesome gaming headset.

Along with the A40 TR, you also get the MixAmp Pro TR accessory controller and the associated Astro Command Center software. The MixAmp gives you easy access to your volume, game/chat mix, preset EQs and Dolby Digital toggle. It also includes an auxiliary audio input so that you can add your own music into the mix as well as the ability to daisy chain mix amps so you don’t need to use any software to chat at a LAN party.

The bundled Astro Command Center software meanwhile allows you to create and save multiple audio profiles, modify EQ settings as well as fine tune your audio output while streaming. You can also adjust your microphone level (including your sidetone levels) and you can even upload audio settings for various streaming scenarios.

One huge thing that most gamers will appreciate is the ability to adjust game and voice volumes at will. The Astro A40 TR absolutely delivers on that front. With a simple knob, I was able to adjust the balancing of what audio comes through in a game, this works on both PC and Xbox, and does so beautifully.

Audio quality was excellent throughout our review process. At AED 999, the Astro A40 TR headset and MixAmp Pro TR are definitely now the cheapest gaming audio solution on the market. But then, if you’re serious about gaming and hearing everything that you should, then you seriously need to own the ASTRO A40 TR Headset and the MixAmp Pro TR.
