Huawei’s latest MateBook laptop line-up brings in improvements in design and performance. We got a chance to review the Huawei MateBook 14 (2024 model), and here are our thoughts about the laptop.
Design
The MateBook 14 (2024) from Huawei is one of their lightest laptops available, weighing around 1.31kg. The laptop has a dimension of 312.6 mm width, 226.8 mm depth, and 14.5 mm height. The main display comes equipped with a stunning 14.2-inch OLED panel, along with the impressive 3:2 aspect ratio that I am fond of. The screen resolution here is 2880 × 1920 with 243 PPI. The display is also designed as a 91% screen-to-body ratio. Since it’s an OLED panel, the contrast ratio is 1000000:1 for deep blacks.
The laptop also has a decent number of connectivity options, including one USB-C port on the left side with support for data transfers, DisplayPort and charging. Other ports on the left include a USB 3.2 Gen 1 port, one HDMI port, and a 3.5mm audio jack. There is another USB 3.2 Gen 1 port on the right side.
The laptop also features a fingerprint integrated power button that is located on the top right side of the working area. It’s a separate button and not part of the keyboard as most brands do these days. The button is circular in design.
The keyboard is backlit and pleasant to type with, and the touchpad has support for multi-touch operations. The size of the touchpad is decent enough for day-to-day tasks.
There are a total of two microphones and two speakers on the laptop. The speakers are located on either side of the bottom panel. There are also air vents on the bottom panel to aid the cooling system. We should also mention that the camera on top of the screen features a 1080p sensor.
Performance
The 2024 edition Huawei MateBook 14 that we got for review, features the Intel Core Ultra 7 155H processor and is paired with 16GB DDR5 6000 MHz memory. The Core Ultra 7 155H is a 16-core chip, featuring 6 performance cores, and 8 efficient cores, and another two power-efficient cores, along with 22 threads to support the performance. The maximum clock speed is 4.8 GHz, and the processor also comes with Intel Arc integrated graphics.
The laptop also comes with a 1TB SSD drive with Windows 11 Home installed. While Huawei does not confirm the make of the SSD, our benchmarks indicate that its a PCIe 4.0 SSD. We ran the CrystalDiskMark benchmark and got read and write speeds of 5223 MB/s and 4954 MB/s, respectively. We also ran other benchmark tools, such as 3D Mark FireStrike/TimeSpy, GeekBench 6 CPU and GPU tests. Take a look at the scores below.
Benchmarks
The device also houses a 70Wh Lithium polymer battery that can provide decent battery performances. We ran the PC Mark 10 Modern Office battery test, and the laptop lasted for 12 hours and 47 minutes. The brightness and volume were set at medium levels.
Other wireless features of the laptop include Bluetooth 5.1 and IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax WiFi connectivity.
Verdict
For those looking for a lightweight laptop, we recommend the Huawei MateBook 14 (2024). The laptop sports a stunning 14.2-inch OLED display that is based on the 3:2 aspect ratio, something only a few brands, such as the Microsoft Surface series devices, offer today. The display also has a screen resolution of 2880 × 1920. The display also comes with several connectivity ports, including a USB-C for fast transfers, DisplayPort, and charging capability.
The laptop comes in Green and Space Gray color options, and the device weighs 1.31 kg. The laptop is powered by the Intel Core Ultra 7 155H processor, along with 16GB of RAM and 1TB SSD with Windows 11 Home. The device also features a 70Wh Lithium polymer battery that offers almost half a day of use. The front camera also sports a 1080p sensor, and the laptop comes with dual speakers.
