Kingston recently unveiled a new portable SSD that features both USB-A and USB-C connectivity options. We got a chance to try out the new 1TB Kingston Dual Portable Solid State Drive, and here are our thoughts about it.
Kingston’s latest dual drive features a durable and portable design, consisting of both metal and plastic material. The main chassis is red in color, and the device features a dimension of 71.85 mm x 21.1 mm x 8.6 mm. The portable drive weighs only 13 g.
As the name suggests, the device comes with dual USB ports, which include USB-A and USB-C connectors. This hybrid drive gives users the flexibility to connect to different devices, such as laptops, smartphones, and tablets, without the need for any adaptor. Each of the USB ports has its own cap for protection, which is transparent black in color.
As for compatibility, the dual portable SSD easily works with Windows 11 systems, macOS (version. 13.7.6 +), Linux (version. 4.4x +), Chrome OS, Android OS, and iOS/iPadOS (version.13+).
Unlike normal flash drives, Kingston managed to encase a proper solid-state drive in such a small and portable design. The drive comes in 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB storage capacities and uses 3D NAND chips. Both the USB-A and USB-C connectors use USB 3.2 Gen 2 interface for high-speed transfers. Kingston claims that the drive is capable of read speeds up to 1050 MB/s, and write speeds up to 950 MB/s. We had tested the drive using CrystalDiskMark and got slightly higher transfer speeds.
