WhatsApp opens username reservations

WhatsApp has begun allowing users to reserve usernames ahead of the global launch of its new username feature later this year, giving people an alternative to sharing their phone numbers when connecting with others on the platform.

The move is designed to enhance privacy by enabling users to communicate without revealing their phone numbers, particularly when interacting with new contacts or joining community and group conversations. The feature is expected to benefit users who prefer to keep their personal phone numbers private while still remaining accessible through the messaging platform.

With more than three billion users worldwide, WhatsApp said it is opening username reservations early to give everyone the opportunity to secure their preferred username before the feature becomes widely available. Users can reserve a unique username now and begin using it once the functionality is rolled out in their region.

To help users choose a distinctive identity, WhatsApp has introduced a username generator that suggests available names. The company also allows creators, small businesses, and organizations to claim their existing Instagram or Facebook usernames, helping them maintain a consistent digital presence across Meta’s platforms.

Privacy remains central to the new feature. WhatsApp said there will be no public directory or username discovery tool, meaning users cannot browse or search for usernames. Instead, people will need to know the exact username to initiate a conversation for the first time. Additionally, users can enable an optional username key, providing an extra layer of control over who can contact them.

Once usernames are officially launched, users who choose to enable the feature will no longer need to share their phone numbers when messaging a person or business for the first time. This is expected to provide greater privacy while simplifying interactions on the platform.

Users can reserve their optional username by updating to the latest version of WhatsApp and navigating to Settings > Account > Username. WhatsApp said the feature will be rolled out gradually over the coming months, with users receiving an in-app notification when usernames become available in their respective countries.
