Review: Dynabook Tecra A50-K Hybrid Business Laptop

Dynabook’s Tecra-series laptops are designed for the hybrid working environment and we got to try out the Dynabook Tecra A50-K 15-inch laptop. Here are our thoughts about the device.

Design

The Dynabook Tecra A50-K features a MIL-STD-810H-certified chassis that should be able to handle the daily bumps that can happen in a hybrid working environment. The chassis also comes with the IONEPURE IPL Antimicrobial Paint Coating for a cleaner work experience. The dimensions of the laptop are 358.2 x 236.9 x 19.9 mm and the device weighs about 1.6kg.

The display features a 15.6-inch IPS panel and the screen resolution is 1920 x 1080, along with 220 nits of screen brightness. The whites appear to be slightly on the warm side and the viewing angles are good.

And just like other Dynabook laptops, this business-grade machine also features a webcam with a privacy shutter, allowing users to close the camera when not in use. Unlike many new models that come with an electronic shutter, this one has to be done manually.

In terms of connectivity, there is a USB 3.2 Gen 1 port, one RJ45, and a MicroSD card reader on the right side, followed by another USB 3.2 Gen 1 port, two USB 4.0 Type-C port, one headset jack, a power connector, and one HDMI port on the left side.

While the laptop also offers a full-sized keyboard and multi-touchpad, the keys are not backlit, which can be a deal-breaker for some users. The keyboard is just decent in terms of typing experience.

Most of the air vents are located on the bottom panel of the laptop, along with the dual speakers that are facing toward the front side.

Features

The Dynabook Tecra A50-K packs a decent chipset to deliver good performance out of the box. The processor used in our review unit came with the 12-core Intel i5-1240P and the integrated GPU here is the Intel Iris Xe. The Alder Lake-based processor has a maximum turbo core speed of 3.3GHz with its power-efficient cores, and up to 4.4GHz speeds with the performance cores.

The machine runs on Windows 11 Professional and is installed on a Samsung MZVLQ256HBJD PCie 3.0 SSD. The system also comes packed with 16GB DDR4 RAM that is sufficient for normal tasks and some office jobs. We ran some benchmarks such as the CrystalDiskMark for SSD speeds, along with CineBench R23, PCMark, 3DMark, and GeekBench 5 for CPU and GPU tests. Take a look at the scores below.

The device also features a 53Wh Lithium Polymer battery along with support for the included 65W AC adaptor. We were able to get through almost a day of use with the laptop while doing normal tasks and editorial jobs. Other features include 802.11ax wireless LAN and Bluetooth connectivity. The laptop also features business-grade security such as Trusted Platform Module (dTPM 2.0) and the Reinforced Security Lock Slot.

Verdict

For those looking for a decent 15.6-inch laptop that is suited for a hybrid working environment, then the Dynabook Tecra A50-K is a good option to consider. The laptop comes with a good 15.6-inch panel that offers good viewing angles. The webcam also comes with a privacy shutter and the laptop features multiple connectivity ports such as USB-C, USB 3.2 Gen 1 port, HDMI, MicroSD card reader, and more.

The laptop is powered by the Intel i5-1240P processor, featuring 12-cores that can reach up to 4.4GHz speeds, along with 16GB DDR4 RAM, and a 256GB PCie 3.0 SSD with Windows 11 Pro installed. The device is also MIL-STD-810H certified and weighs 1.6kg. And the 53Wh Lithium Polymer battery can last for almost a day of use.
