Review: Wiko Rainbow

Wiko was one of the seven smartphone companies that launched during GITEX Shopper 2014. The company sent their Rainbow smartphone for review at Review Central Labs.

The Wiko Rainbow is a Dual SIM smartphone featuring a stunning 5-inch IPS touch screen. This HSPA+ phone has support for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity. In  addition, the smartphone runs Android 4.4 operating system and features a 1.3-GHz Quad Core Mediatek MT6582 processor under the hood.

The Wiko Rainbow also comes with 1GB of RAM and an internal memory of 4GB, which can further be extended by microSD to up to 32GB. The Wiko Rainbow also lets you take high quality photos and Full HD videos with its 8-megapixel camera. A 2-megapixel front camera meanwhile lets you take some good-looking selfies.

The reason the smartphone is called Rainbow is because it is available in seven colourful variations such as white, coral, purple, black, fuchsia, turquoise, and neon
yellow.

Wiko Rainbow 1The build quality of the product is average – the company has gone with plastic for the body of the smartphone. Wiko has given a sort of rubbery finish to the overall design which is quite good.

The entire back panel can be changed entirely with colourful back-plates. The review unit we received from the company came in black, with two additional backplates (yellow and turqoise), which we think was a nice touch.

In addition, the Wiko also packs in a micro SIM to regular SIM, a nano SIM to regular SIM, and a nano SIM to micro SIM adaptor inside the box. The Wiko Rainbow supports dual SIM and takes in regular SIM cards.

Wiko Rainbow 2With the user interface of the Rainbow, Wiko has gone with the plain vanilla Android UI, without any skin over it. Using the phone is quite intuitive. The overall reception quality of the smartphone was quite good.

When it comes to the camera, we were able to take some good images. The 5-inch HD screen is probably the plus point of the device, which allows you to comfortably enjoy some good videos. However, the video player that comes with the device does not support a wide range of formats and codecs. But that’s not a biggie – just download the MX player app and you will be sorted.

With the Rainbow, Wiko has a good mid-range smartphone, which comes with a good screen, good call reception quality and a decent camera to the boot. The smartphone market is really staurated at the moment and it is all about what feature-sets companies can offer and at what price. If Wiko can manage to offer feature-rich smartphones at affordable prices, it could manage to carve a niche for itself.
