Review: Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 5G

Samsung’s latest Galaxy Z Flip 3 5G brings in more performance, camera capability, and improved design than its predecessors. Let’s take a look at the features and capability of the device.

Design

Samsung is no stranger when it comes to innovative smartphone designs. The Galaxy series has come a long way from AMOLED displays. Infinity Displays, Edge panels, and more. And while the company has already released foldable devices in the past, this model is the third iteration of the Flip series. The main display in its unfolded state has a screen size of 6.7-inch and the screen resolution is 1080 x 2640 with a pixel density of 426 ppi. The Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel features a 120Hz refresh rate for all those super-smooth visuals.

The brightness of the screen also shoots up to 1200 nits so you will be able to see the content in bright daylight. The smartphone, when in its unfolded state, has a thickness of 6.9mm. And when folded, the device is between 15.9mm to 17.1mm thick. The device weighs about 183g. While most smartphones feature a seamless design on the edges of the screen, the edges of the Galaxy Z Flip3 5G has a small bump that is all over the display.

This kind of design used to be seen on older smartphones that were released years ago. The only disadvantage is that while you try to wipe the display with your hand or a cloth, the edge of the display easily collects dust since the bump acts as a barrier. That said, the display is surrounded by an aluminum frame and features Gorilla Glass Victus to resist scratches and accidental falls. The screen also has support for HDR10+ content.

The Galaxy Z Flip 3 5G also has a secondary display on its outer body, featuring a 1.9-inch panel and the screen resolution is 260 x 152. The display sits on the same island where the main cameras reside. The cameras are aligned in a parallel fashion and there is no sight of any camera lens bumps as seen on many other flagships.

While the USB-C port is located underneath the device, the volume control rockers and the power button are on the upper right side. The power button on the Flip 3 doubles as a fingerprint scanner. The rear side is made of glass with Gorilla Glass Victus and the device is an IPX8-certified water-resistant smartphone.

There is the Samsung insignia on the outer portion of the hinge area. The company mentions that the hinge is very durable and will not limit the number of times you will fold and unfold the device.

The smartphone also sports stereo speakers that are fine-tuned by AKG. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 5G comes in simple packing and with minimum items such as the device itself, SIM tool, a USB-C cable, and the instructions manual.

Performance

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 5G isn’t just about its fancy fold-n-flip design but also packs one of the fastest chips from Qualcomm. The device runs on the Snapdragon 888 SoC, featuring a total of eight computing cores. The GPU used is the Adreno 660 for high-framerate gaming and the internal storage comes in either 128GB or 256GB, along with 8GB of RAM for sufficient multitasking.

The memory used is based on the UFS 3.1. The smartphone also runs on Android 12 OS atop the One UI 4.0 skin by Samsung. The operating system ran super smooth most of the time during surfing the internet and other operations and the 120Hz mode enhances the visual experience. We ran some benchmarks on the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 5G and here are the results.

While both the shooters feature 12MP cameras, the main snapper features a pixel pitch of 1.4um with OIS and Dual Pixel AF, along with an aperture of f/1.8. The secondary camera for ultrawide shots features a pixel pitch of 1.12um. The main camera is capable of shooting videos up to 4K at 60fps, along with 1080p videos up to 240fps and 720p slow-motion videos up to 960fps. The front-facing selfie camera features a 10MP sensor with a pixel pitch of 1.22um and is capable of recording videos up to 4K at 30fps.

Battery

The smartphone houses a 3300 mAh Li-Po battery and the device brings support for both wired and wireless charging. You will be able to use fast chargers up to 15W and fast wireless charging up to 10W. And if any of your other wireless charging devices run out of juice, you can rely on the Flip 3 with its 4.5W reverse wireless charging capability. We were able to get almost a day of use while using the Flip 3 for calls, taking some snaps, video calls, YouTube, and more.

Verdict

Samsung’s third iteration of the Flip series smartphones offers several improvements over its predecessor models. The foldable display features a  Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel with a 120Hz refresh rate for solid and sharp images with super-fluid videos and gaming. The device also has an aluminum frame and the hinge is more durable than previous versions. The main cameras are capable of snapping great quality images and with videos up to 4K at 60fps.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 5G is powered by the Snapdragon 888 SoC for fast performance and the gaming is taken care of with the high-end Adreno 660 GPU. The device features 8GB of RAM with 128GB or 256GB of internal storage with Android 12 OS. The smartphone also packs a 3000 mAh battery with support for wired, wireless, and reverse wireless charging. If you’re into portable and foldable smartphones, then the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 5G is a good but pricey option to consider.
