Design-wise, this one features compact and neat look and feel to it – much like a tiny external portable hard drive. The drive features a black look overall with silver aluminum edging on the sides. The bottom of the device is built using soft rubber pad, that keeps the drive in place especially when you use it on long drives for instance.
The on/off button and indicator lights for power, wireless activity, and Internet connectivity are located on the front of the drive, while a micro-USB 2.0 port is on the back. An SD-card slot, meanwhile, for storage expansion is on the right side.
In order to use the device, you will first need to download and install the SanDisk Media Drive app from the Apple iTunes Store or the Google Play Store. Once the app is installed, switch on the Connect Wireless Media Drive. The way the drive works is, it creates a wireless hotspot thus allowing you to stream videos, view pictures and listen to music on the go.
Once you switch on the device, go back to the wireless networks list on your mobile device and you will see the drive as one of the connections available. Simply connect to it and you will be presented with a list of content to browse through – the content’s that’s stored on the Connect Wireless Media Drive.
Using the app is pretty simple and straight-forward. While viewing the content, you can also download the content onto your mobile device at the click of a button – it’s that simple. The SanDisk Connect Wireless Media Drive allows you to connect up to eight mobile devices. In addition, you can stream 720p videos to up to five devices simultaneously.
The movie-streaming performance on the SanDisk Media app through the Connect Wireless Media Drive was excellent. We streamed an MP4 file onto our Lenovo Yoga tablet, and the video launched after a few seconds of buffering in-app. The picture and sound quality were excellent, and we didn’t experience any stuttering, blurring, or hang-ups while watching. The drive responded instantly when we hit play or pause.
When it came to battery life, the SanDisk Connect Wireless Media Drive offered around 7 hours on a single charge. That’s a good amount of battery life you can count upon. The SanDisk Connect Wireless Media Drive falls under a brand new niche of storage devices – it is an external hard disk drive-ish device made primarily for streaming videos, music, and photos to mobile devices.
The device does perform quite well when it comes to streaming videos, viewing images or listening to music on the go. The Sandisk Media Drive app also performs well and makes it a walk in the park, when it comes to enjoying content wirelessly, without any hassle. The SanDisk Connect Wireless Media Drive thus wins our Recommendation! If you are on the look out for a wireless streaming device, that you can carry around while on the road, the SanDisk Connect Wireless Media Drive could be something you could consider.
