Sony has announced the launch of the new a7 III Mirrorless Digital Camera, a notable upgrade to the company’s substantial line of full-frame cameras. Major advancements are possible due to the use of a newly developed 24.2MP Exmor R BSI CMOS sensor and BIONZ X processor with front-end LSI, which unlock numerous features and settings. With a back-illuminated design, shooters will enjoy sensitivities in an extended range of ISO 50-204800.
Also, the sensor will deliver images with up to 15 stops of dynamic range with a 14-bit raw file. The camera comes with a 24.2MP Full-Frame Exmor R BSI CMOS Sensor, a BIONZ X Image Processor, Front-End LSI, 693-Point AF System, and 10 fps Shooting. The camera also accompanies UHD 4K30p video shooting capabilities with HLG & S-Log3 Gammas, 2.36m-Dot Tru-Finder OLED EVF, a 3-inch 922k-Dot Tilting Touchscreen LCD, 5-Axis SteadyShot INSIDE Stabilization, built-In Wi-Fi and NFC, and Dual SD Slots.
This combination of features brings with it a significantly upgraded hybrid AF system with 693 phase-detect and 425 contrast-detect points. Continuous shooting is now available at up to 10 fps with either the electronic or mechanical shutter. Also, the 5-axis in-body image stabilization system now works for up to five stops. A major new feature of this model is UHD 4K video recording at up to 30 fps. The Sony a7 III uses full-pixel readout for sharp footage and has Hybrid-Log Gamma, S-Log2, and S-Log3 for various HDR and color grading workflows. Full HD slow motion has been improved to 120 fps, as well.
In addition to improvements to image quality and features, the a7 III has a redesigned body that now features a joystick for intuitive operation of the AF point. Also, the body accepts the NP-FZ1000 battery for getting up to 710 shots on a single charge. There are dual SD card slots, including one with UHS-II support for faster data offload. And, the camera offers both a 2.36m-dot OLED EVF and a 3.0″922k-dot tilting touchscreen LCD. Other improvements include a USB 3.1 Type-C port, a PC sync port, and improved weather sealing.
