Review: Jawbone ERA (2014) Bluetooth Headset

Jawbone is known for some cool products including its Bluetooth headsets, wireless speakers and so on. The company’s new Jawbone ERA is the newest iteration of the company’s prior headset model and is 42 percent smaller. Though it shares the same name as its predecessor, it has gone some major design changes – it is now shorter and narrower and comes with clean design in four different colours: red, black, silver and bronze.

Jawbone ERA - 4

Inside the box, the ERA is bundled with four silicone ear tips – small, medium and large for the right ear, and a medium one for the left ear. Also bundled with the ERA is a micro-USB cable that can be used for charging the device, though the wall adapter is no longer included in the box. Instead, you can opt for a compact black or silver case with a rechargeable battery built-in for a premium of AED 80.

Jawbone ERA - 3

The Jawbone ERA is small and discreet enough to go unnoticed for most of the time you are wearing it. The soft silicone inserts fit easily into your ear and feel quite comfortable when using it for a couple of hours at a time. The ERA comes with the company’s patented Noise Assassin 4.0 technology, which works to minimize surrounding noise, especially when you attend calls in a noisy environment such as the metro or a park.

Audio and reception quality was great with the Jawbone ERA, when you consider the size of the headset. Era uses Bluetooth 4.0 to connect, although it’s backwards compatible with older devices that don’t support the newer standard. Once it’s paired, Jawbone’s free app offers extra features. It displays battery life as a percentage — an icon is also displayed in the phone’s status bar — and has a “find” feature that plays a tone to help locate a lost headset.

Jawbone ERA - 5

The headset offers a standard battery life of around 4 hour. However, if you opt for the charging case, the battery life will bump up to 10 hours. The small plastic housing is made to hang from a keychain, with a snap-equipped strap at one end. At the same side, there’s a flip-up micro-USB plug. Era connects, and then folds down, resting inside.

Jawbone’s ERA is a light-weight and comfortable Bluetooth headset. The design and build quality of the product is pretty impressive. With a decent sound and reception quality, this could be one of your choices if you are on the market for a premium Bluetooth headset.

Price: AED 499, AED 419 (without the charging case)
